Parent & Child Tournament 6th September

This was very well attended and provided a lot of fun for all involved.

£140 was raised for Marie Curie Cancer Care

The weather was kind, and the excellent barbeque did brisk trade. On court, the eventual winners were James and George Rapson who regained their title of two years ago. James's high kicking serve was just too much for most of their opponents. Runners up were Jane & Guy Dixon, and the Under 10 winners were Ninian & Callum Macgregor (Callum is the under 10 one).

Pewsey TC Boasts TWO Champions of Champions

Rob Guthrie has joined Lauren Cook as a fellow Wiltshire Champion of Champions.

Rob had a titanic struggle in his final against Ron Marshall of Trowbridge Tennis Club, winning 6-4 , 2-6 , 6-4. This included being 1-4 down in the first set and 0-4 down in the deciding set !. As all those who know Rob's style of play he never gives up any points and has superb speed around the court which got him out of trouble.

Lauren Cook, like Rob, showed incredible fighting spirit in her 7-5 ,7-6 victory over Karen Peedle from Next Gerneration. From 0-5 down in the first set she showed amazing resilience and skill to reel off the next 7 games to clinch the first set. In a tight second set she held her nerve once again, to clinch the set and the match in a hard fought tie break.

Both Rob & Lauren have played at Pewsey Tennis Club from the first time they picked up a tennis racquet and progressed through to the Pewsey Men's and Ladies A teams , whilst also forming one of the most successful mixed doubles partnerships in Wiltshire, playing for Pewsey A Mixed team.

Pewsey Top of the League again!

L to R: Jon Gregory, Martin Wright, Jon Veale, Rob GuthrieMonday 10th August was the final match for Pewsey Men's A team, and by winning it they capped their position as Division 1 winners for the third year in succession with the accolade of remaining unbeaten all season.

In addition, the men's B team, captained by Nick Hewens, gained promotion from division 2, so Pewsey will have two teams in the top division next season. Click here for full details of other team results.

Court Maintenance

The courts were all treated with moss-killer on Monday 20th July.

Just so you know what’s planned – in case these works disrupt your planned use of the courts:

Week commencing Monday 10th August (subject to weather conditions) power washing of Courts 1 to 5.
Although this is a coaching week the work can be planned around these activities.

Week commencing Monday 7th September – Courts 4 & 5 being repainted.

A bit of fun
A new website www.tennishead.net is running a ‘competition’ (– a weak excuse for an email address harvest!) As it looks quite an interesting site, and as the Club would benefit if we were successful I don’t mind promoting it here:

If enough of our members log on at www.tennishead.net/win we could receive 1,000 new tennis balls for the club. Have a go!

Lauren Clears Another Hurdle

Champion of Champions Lauren Cook has just passed her level 2 community coach award in Bristol and is playing in the Ladies County Cup in Poole this week.

June 2009

Spotted in the local paper:

"Pewsey Girl does good
Carnival Queen Lauren Cook has won the Wiltshire Lawn Tennis Champion of Champions Ladies final.
Tennis clubs from across Wiltshire entered and Lauren beat Karen Peedle 7-5, 7-6 at the final played at The Next Generation Tennis Centre. She will be presented with her prize at the Wiltshire LTA presentation evening in November."

Many congratulations Lauren!

Opening Day a Success - Sunday April 5th
Warm sunshine welcomed a good turnout for the traditional Opening Day of the new season. The roll-up tournament was closely fought, but the winners were Mary Guthrie and John Wyles.

The tournament was followed by the Wimbledon Tickets Draw when, thanks to our good proportion of members who have signed up for British Tennis membership, no less than 27 pairs of tickets were allotted to participating members. If more people join up this year, there will be even more happy faces this time next year.

Sponsor(s) sought for Pewsey Junior Tennis Tournament - April 2010
It's too late now for the 2009 tournament as the application forms and brochures have gone to the printers, but we would love to hear from any business with local connections who would like to have their name associated with this highly successful tournament, which attacts competitors from all over the South West. Enquiries to Jon Veale jonveale@hotmail.com.

Quiz Night/ Presentations - January 17th 2009
The evening was very well attended as ever. 68 competitors fought it out for the Bob Harris Trophy (and a bottle of wine each!). The success of the evening was such that the sum of £533 was added to the club coffers. Congratulations to Dave Major and all who helped!
Here are the happy winners:

It was also the occasion for Matthew Popham to hand over a cheque for £310 to Jenny Brisker of Save the Children Fund, being the money raised by the autumn Club Tournaments.

The Committee decided to give the 'Most Improved Player' award to Neil Guthrie for his achievements in the league-winning A team - presented by team mate and Head Coach Martin Wright:
