Amanda Foxton receives LTA's Meritorious Service Award

Amanda's outstanding contribution to the club and to Wiltshire tennis over the last 30 years has been recognised by this accolade. The Committee is sure that all who have benefitted from her endless efforts will agree it is richly deserved.

Here she is receiving the award from Wilts LTA President Sir Geoffrey Owen at the Wilts LTA AGM on 30th November:

To put it in context, it should be understood that these awards are very rare (ie half a dozen a year across the country). To see the full citation see here.

GO PEWSEY TC!"

Sunday September 25th - Ladies and Mens Annual Doubles Tournament

Lovely sunshine broke through to make for a very enjoyable day. 7 mens pairs and sadly just 3 ladies pairs competed for the cups making a contribution of £130 to .

Matthew and Lorraine Popham provided a great lunch of pate, bread, cheese, salad and their always popular chocolate brownies.

Amanda Foxton organised brilliantly as ever, and Jennifer Brisker was there on behalf of Save the Children to present the silverware to:
Annabel & Catherine Beard and Martin Wright & Jon Gregory (pictured below):

Carol Spence and Frances Findlay were runners up in the Ladies, and Rob Guthrie and Jack Darvell in the men's.
The Wooden Spoon (actually two CurlyWurlies) went deservedly to Neville Burrell and Paul Coxon, who nevertheless enjoyed some (but not enough) purple patches!

August 2011

Aug 28th to 31st Wiltshire Junior County Closed Tournament

Once again Pewsey TC were honoured to host this prestigious event, which as ever provided some excellent tennis. Those who watched would agree the standard was very high, and sadly Pewsey missed out on any major wins - but Jess Archer gave us something to shout about by winning the Plate competition for the Girls 16 and under. Local successes included Will Bissett from Devizes and Mikey Puttick from Aldbourne, both now attending Bath Academy.

The event was given extra prestige by the attendance on finals day by some Top Brass from the LTA:
UK LTA President, Peter Bretherton was accompanied by Wiltshire LTA President, Sir Geoffrey Owen and James Munro, UK Director of Communications.

For Pewsey, Amanda Foxton ran things with her usual aplomb, and had organised an army of Volunteers to man the Shop and provide catering.

Three Presidents together:

Amanda Foxton, Pewsey TC President, with (l) Sir Geoffrey Owen, Wiltshire LTA President and (r) Peter Bretherton, National LTA President

The Bob Harris Awards

The Club decided to honour the memory of its former Club president, Bob Harris, by creating a series of coaching awards to support talented junior players as well as funding group coaching for Mini Red team. Chairman, Colin Gratton said that Pewsey Tennis Club had a long tradition of encouraging its junior players to improve, compete and enjoy their tennis and that Bob Harris was a great supporter of the juniors. These awards are a great tribute to his loyal service to the Club and I know he would be very pleased that the Awards have been set-up and awarded annually.

Left: Bob's successor as Club President, Amanda Foxton presented the winners with their certificates
accompanied by Club Chairman, Colin Gratton. Right: The recipients show off their certificates.
They are (l to r) Sam Birkett (10), Thomas Benson (9) and Isaac Whitehead (11).

March 2011

The Spring Ball was on Saturday 26th March - full report and pics to come.

The Bob Harris Quiz Night on Sat Jan 15th...

...was a very successful and well attended event. Thanks to all involved in the organisation, preparation and clearing up. - especially Dave Major. Early estimates are that some £400 were raised.

The winners of the Bob Harris Trophy were the team ‘5 go to Pewsey’
(Angie and Simon Baldock, Jacqui Antczak, Julie and Colin).

The winners of the coveted Slippery Slope Award were the Men’s A team (who could only finish runners up in League div 1 after being champions for 3 years) – Martin Wright, Jon Gregory and Jon Veale received the trophy from the Chairman, Colin Gratton). Bob would have enjoyed the evening, and as instigator of the Slippery Slope award would surely have appreciated its going to what is still one of the best teams in the County!

Please lock the doors!

There have been reports recently of theft from the clubhouse and of unwelcome people gaining access for purposes of smoking and generally hanging out. Please be reminded to lock the doors if you are playing on the back courts and no-one else is around and to ensure doors are all locked on last person leaving.

(Also please do not tamper with the thermostat.)

Don't Park by the Football Club!

A member recently got caught out when he parked in the Football Club's curtilage, and found he had been locked in. You have been warned!

Bob Harris

We are very sad to report the death of the club's President, Bob Harris.

He suffered a heart attack on Wednesday 20th October and passed away suddenly.

There will be a small Family cremation at Salisbury followed by a memorial service at St John's Church, Pewsey on Friday 29th October at 2pm.

Click here to read an article that appeared in the Gazette & Herald on 19th January 2006 following his being presented with the LTA's Meritorious Service Award.

September 2010

16th September - Mens & Ladies Doubles Tournaments in aid of
and Charlie's Charity

The men's competition attracted a good field of (mostly very late) entries, and it was good to see a mixture of Senior and Junior players. Continuing an unbeaten run of three years the winners were Martin Wright and Jon Gregory, seen here receiving the cup from Jennifer Brisker, the local Save the Children representative and a keen PTC member:

L to R, Martin Wright, Jennifer Brisker and Jon Gregory

The ladies' competition was rather less well attended - just two pairs competed, and they completed their event (played over 3 sets) before Jennifer arrived! Luckily Judith Deck was there to snap the finalists:
L to R Sally, Patti, Marijke, Elaine

The winners were Patti Mann and Elaine King (same as last year), but big thanks are due to Sally Brown and Marijke Craig for at least making them play for it!

We must raise the profile of this event next year, and perhaps give more thought to the date chosen.

5th September - Parent and Child Tournament
The dreadful weather on Sunday morning relented by lunchtime to allow this very enjoyable event to proceed.

In the 16U category Jeremy Barker (13) and his father Charlie won the cup after a final against Tom and Rob Lindeman.

In the younger group, 10U, Callum Macgregor and dad Ninian repeated their triumph of last year. Runners up were David and Isaac Whitehead

It was also the occasion for the presentation of trophies to the winners and runners up of the Club Junior Tournaments held in August:

August 2010

The Juniors were very busy in August with a week of Holiday Coaching, an Activities Week organised by Martin Wright and the Club Junior Tournaments run by Amanda Foxton. All went very well and the club raised some welcome funds.

At the end of the month the Club hosted the Wiltshire Junior Closed Tournament, which saw the best young players in the county battling it out on our courts. Anyone watching was treated to some very high class play in the final stages.

July 2010

25th July: A 'Social' with Tennis

A good number turned out for a delicious summer barbecue courtesy of Matthew Popham and a 'roll-up' tournament organised beautifully as ever by Amanda Foxton. Antonia Clements won the Ladies' tournament and Matt Darvell the Men's. Pictures available here

20th-23rd July: AEGON Summer County Cup

Lauren Cook is representing Wiltshire at the AEGON Summer County Cup in Cheltenham, starting 20th July.
You can read about it and follow her progress on the LTA website. In their group are Bedfordshire, Durham & Cleveland and the Isle of Man. We wish her and all the team the best of luck.

April 2010

April 14th to 18th: The Michael Fowler Architects Pewsey Junior Tennis Tournament

This was considered a great success with a large turnout, excellent organisation and good weather. To cap it all, our own David Bayley (with a very nasty hand blister) won the Boys under 18 title in 2 straight sets - well done David.

A quote from our Chairman:
"Thankyous can seem trite sometimes but I really applaud Jon and Amanda on a very successful week and I also know that support via Rachel Popham/Lauren Cook as well as the superb catering team, Carol Parsons/Jane Dixon has made this tournament memorable -well done and a warm thankyou to all involved."
- Colin Gratton

Spectator Information

Sunday 11th April was the opening day of the new season. There was an excellent turnout (40-50 players) for the 'Roll Up' tournament. Jon Gregory won the most games among the men, and Mary Guthrie among the ladies. The winning Junior was Guy Dixon with William Blakeney runner up, having won the same number of games but conceding more.

Opening day Roll-Up Tournament

...and even more people (another 50) arrived to attend the draw for the club's allocation of 24 pairs of Wimbledon tickets. There is to be no inquiry into how it came about that the Club Chairman, also MC at the ballot, happened to be the first name drawn!

March 2010

At the March committee meeting, Bev Birkett was welcomed as the Club's new Treasurer. She will take over from Rob Lindeman at the end of April. At the same meeting Neville Burrell was appointed Vice Chairman.

The idea of a storage box with a lock for keeping balls in was put 'on hold' because the situation seemed to have improved, with fewer balls mysteriously disappearing. Perhaps the very airing of the subject at the AGM had done some good?

February 2010

24th February was the AGM. Highlights were:

  • Colin Gratton summarised the Club's progress and achievements in the past year.
  • Rob Lindeman (retiring Treasurer) presented the accounts and followed up by giving an excellent explanation of how the Club's finances were managed.
  • Sally Brown and Angie Baldock are standing down from the committee, but on the plus side we welcome Jane Dixon as a new committee member.
  • It was agreed that membership renewal forms would be sent out by email from now on.
  • A good discussion resulted in a new idea regarding the supply of tennis balls for members' general use. A store box with a combination lock will have a supply of balls in good condition, which will be available to all paid-up members, who will be given the combination.

A full report/minutes will appear here in due course.

We are delighted to say that the tournament is now sponsored by Michael Fowler Architects.
Its full name is now The Michael Fowler Architects Pewsey Junior Open Tournament.

Mike has been a long time supporter of the club, and indeed designed our much admired pavilion.

Changes:

The Committee are sorry to say that Rob Lindeman is standing down from his positions as Vice-Chairman and Treasurer, and there is now a vacancy for each of those. Also Jon Veale is leaving after several successful years as Coach and we wish him well in his new career in the family business.

Jon is replaced from 1st January by Jon Gregory, a long time member and one of the stars of the triumphant mens A team. He has all our best wishes, and we hope he will enjoy his time not only supporting Martin but also making his own contributions to the club.
